The Event Marketer finalists for the 2016 Experience Design & Technology Awards have been announced and we are honored to be a finalist in two categories! Two of our activations created in partnership with CNN, Facebook, and Instagram for the 2016 presidential election have earned us nominations for Event Marketer’s annual awards recognizing the best executions in event technology each year. Our Instagram Mini Oval Office is up for the Best Consumer Environment and our CNN and Facebook #CampaignCamper is a finalist for the Best Mobile Marketing Vehicle.
Instagram Mini Oval Office
We wanted to build a compelling visual activation that would not only allow DNC and RNC attendees to capture and share an immersive and unique visual moment tailor made for their Instagram feed but drive organic conversation around the conventions as a “must-see” experience.
What could be more presidential than the Oval Office, and what could feel more presidential to a consumer than sitting in the Oval Office? We took all the details of the actual Oval Office from the carpet, desk, chairs, couches, flags, curtains, and even the art on the wall and baked it down into a miniaturized version that would snugly fit into a shipping container as part of the overall Facebook/Instagram footprint at the conventions. Every piece of the Mini Oval Office was made to replicate items that are actually in the President’s Oval Office. The presidential desk was designed to have similar engravings and raised columns with the center point being a subtle raised Instagram logo extruding from the front of the desk. The leather chair that the President sits in was miniaturized to match, the blue carpet and Presidential seal were replicated and even the flags that anchor the desk were given the mini treatment.
The mini oval office quickly became a destination within the Republican and Democratic National Conventions for people to stop at and create content that could be shared on Facebook and Instagram. Celebrities and influencers like Chelsea Handler, Samantha Bee, and Ben Carson held interviews from the Mini Oval Office as well as major media outlets like Fox News, Glamour Magazine, and Refinery 29 covering the unit.
CNN and Facebook #CampaignCamper
In 2015, Facebook and CNN partnered to make the upcoming Presidential election more social starting with the primary debates. Understanding the enormity of this election and the passionate views on the candidates, they wanted to find a compelling way for voters around the country to make their voices heard through social channels and beyond. It was not only critical to allow voters the ability to voice their concerns to their own network, but to find a way to engage them with the global political community as well.
To accomplish this, we custom designed, fabricated, and wrapped a classic American Airstream trailer and filled it with FoxTales video technology. The trailer traveled across the nation to hot button locations, allowing voters to ask the candidates a question or simply voice their feelings about the election. Users could then share the videos in real time from their phone straight to Facebook and Instagram and all of the videos were aggregated in a custom Facebook Gallery tab on CNN’s Facebook page. For both the Republican and Democratic presidential primary debates on CNN, select #CampaignCamper voter videos were aired live during the broadcasts to directly ask the candidates questions.
The visibility of the videos shared across social media and seen during the debates connected with millions of voters and its impact led to a social media and politics exhibit, #LikeShareElect, at the Newseum in Washington DC.
In addition to the video capabilities of the #CampaignCamper, the mobile experience served as a Facebook Live broadcast hub for CNN and CNN Politics as they covered the primary elections. The camper hosted various Facebook Live segments and interviews throughout CNN’s nationwide tour.
The success of the 2015 #CampaignCamper has led to a re-launched camper for CNN, Facebook, and Instagram’s #MyVote tour for the presidential election.
